Families of Bovina - Four Generations follow-up

After I posted the photo in my September 22 blog entry showing Margaret Boggs Ormiston with her daughter Ruth Monroe, granddaughter Francis Burns and great-grand son Alan Burns, one of her descendants sent along three other four generation photographs, two of which involve Margaret. This photo, provided by Ed Davidson, shows Margaret's daughter Lois Davidson, her grandson Ed Davidson and her great grandson Jon Davidson.

As noted in the September 22 blog entry, the Ormistons are noted for living long. Margaret was just shy of 100 at her death in 1966. Lois was just shy of 80 at her death 10 years later and Ed is still going strong at 91, just like his cousin Frances, who is about 11 days older than Ed. Ed lives in the San Diego area and his son Jon lives in Yakima, Washington.

Here is one from 1922 sent by Dick Davidson that shows Margaret Ormiston with her mother, Jane Archibald Boggs, daughter Lois Ormiston Davidson and granddaughter, Jane Davidson.

I also asked Ed for a more recent one involving him with his descendants. Here's Ed with his wife Maria, son Tom, granddaughter Anna Davidson Jones and her husband Zach Jones and their two children (and Ed and Maria's great grandchildren) Eloise and Otto Jones. Anna, Zach and their two children live in Portland, Oregon.

Bovina Pioneers - Francis and Nancy Coulter

I will be starting a regular series in this blog highlighting some of the early families in Bovina. I'm starting with the Coulters, from whom I'm descended. Francis and Nancy Coulter are my five great grandparents and are ancestors of such Bovina families as Boggs, Burgins, Burns, Doigs, Gladstones, Hilsons, Millers, Monroes, Ormistons, Parsons, Roberts, and Russells.

Coulter was a major name in the Town of Bovina since the early 1800s. The road on which the founding Coulter ancestor lived still is known as Coulter Brook and there are many Coulter descendants, including those with the Coulter name, in Delaware County and throughout the United States. This makes it all the more ironic that Francis Coulter, ancestor of many of Bovina’s older families, was not born a Coulter. When Francis was christened 3 September 1771 in Roberton, Scotland , he was christened Francis Coltherd, the son of Walter Coltherd and Elizabeth Rae. Francis married Nancy Glendenning, daughter of James Glendenning and Isabel Hendry.

Francis and his family came to the United States around 1798. Francis and Nancy were in Albany a year or so, then headed to Stamford for a couple of more before settling in Bovina. At the time he settled in Bovina, it was still part of the town of Delhi. He settled on lot 56 of Great Lot 40 of the Hardenburgh Patent in 1805. It was 156 acres. He never owned it, but rented it from Louisa Livingston. His rent was 28 3/4 bushels of grain. The farm eventually came to be owned by his son David in 1858.

The Coulters had nine children. They all lived to adulthood and most stayed in Bovina except their daughter Ellen, who moved to Horseheads with her husband John Ormiston and their son William, who married his cousin Isabella Glendenning and moved to Janesville, Wisconsin in 1848 and where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Nancy Glendenning Coulter died on 6 March 1843. Her husband Francis died three years later on 6 June 1846 in Bovina, Delaware Co, NY. Both are buried in the old United Presbyterian churchyard in Bovina. They are buried near their daughter Elizabeth and three of their grandchildren, children of their son James.

David Fletcher Hoy, a Bovina native, spent many years in the early 20th century collecting information on Bovina families. That included some images, which are now held by his grandson, David F. Hoy, III. Dave scanned these images and graciously allowed me to post these on the Bovina Families Flickr page. Families represented include Hoy, Miller, Archibald, Storie, Gladstone, Davidson and Gow, among others. There are a couple of pictures for which the identity is tentative. If you recognize any, please put your two cents in the comments field. And I would welcome any other information you may have on the images posted so far. Latest updates to Bovina Families on Flickr - Miller and Burns

I've added two more sets of photographs to the Bovina families sets on Flickr. These sets include people related to me. Some come out of my photos and some come from others. Particular thanks to Jack Burns and David F. Hoy for providing me scans of their photographs.

The first set is the Miller Family, portraits of descendants of Thomas Miller and Nancy Laidlaw from Roberton, Scotland. The Millers saw four of their children emigrate to the United States. David Miller came first in 1815. His brothers William and Berry Shaw and his sister Christina came over in 1831. Only one brother remained in Scotland. The other set now on Flickr are pictures from the Burns family, with whom I am also related. My grandfather LaFever's mother was a Burns.
