Bovina Bicentennial Celebration Progress Report

Planning for Bovina's Bicentennial Celebration has taken much longer than expected, mainly because of the pandemic. But hallelujah! progress is being made.

I reported on our progress to the Town Board at their monthly meeting on April 12. Here's a summary:

Parade

The parade committee, made up of Molly Brannen, Kevin Brown, Donna Dickson-Noonan and me, met in March and finalized the form for parade participants. If you are interested in having an entry in the parade, contact me at bovinahistorian@gmail.com. Parade rules are posted at Bovina Center, New York: Bovina Bicentennial (bovinany.org).  We will be staging the parade at Lake Jillienne on Coulter Brook Road (thank you to Susan LaFever for giving permission). The parade will come up Coulter Brook Road past the cemetery and then down County Route 6 into the hamlet, finishing at McIntosh's flat across from the creamery.

The parade will start at 10 am.

Bovina Bicentennial Festival

Speaking of the flat, we will be having displays of Bovina businesses, children's games, a blacksmithing demonstration and other activities. Also on the flat will be the various floats from the parade so people can see them throughout the day. We will have some food vendors so you won't go hungry.

The festival committee includes Brooke Alderson, Marni Greenberg, Samantha Misa, Sangeeta Patrap and me. Also included are Pamela Benson and Mary Pelletier who are coordinating the music event.

Activities on the flat will commence at noon. At 4:30, the music program will start, finishing at 6:30. Pamela and Mary working with local Bovina musicians for the program.

And if you want more music, Livestock will be offering a free public concert on Bob Hall Road starting at 9 pm.

The Bicentennial committee is grateful to Roger McIntosh and the McIntosh family for use of the flat. And a thank you to Molly Brannen, who farms this field, for working around her haying schedule so we can use the site.

Other activities

A vintage baseball game will take place at 2 pm at Creamery field (1396 County Hwy 6) hosted by the Bovina Dairymen. The Dairymen will be taking on the Mountain Athletic Club from Fleischmanns.

Brooke Alderson is coordinating an art project that will have local artists produce works representing missing or altered buildings in the hamlet.

Susan Yelovich has gathered a group to create a Bovina Bicentennial afghan, which will be raffled off during the celebration.

Stay tuned for further updates as the celebration moves ahead. Thanks to everyone for their support of our belated celebration of this milestone in Bovina's history.
