Remembering the Bovina Bicentennial Parade, Part 1

For the month of January, I’m going to do daily postings on the Town of Bovina Historian Facebook page on the Bovina Bicentennial parade held on July 30, 2022. This is the first of what will be four postings in January sharing these entries with you. I thought it would be nice during the cold winter months to reminisce about that lovely day in July. It’ll also serve a second purpose – I may have missed some names and other information on the parade entries, so please contact me at bovinahistorian@gmail.com. I want to have an accurate record of the parade.

January 1, 2023 - The Bovina Fire Department came out in force for the big celebration. Here's who was all involved: Neleh Brown, flag carrier; Charleigh Brown and Emilie Choquette banner carriers; Dawn and Kevin Brown vintage uniforms; Josh Choquette, Nancy Cianci, John Madeo and Curry Ford on the vintage hose cart; Kadence LaFever (FQ) and Tim Schneider in 1951 Willys Jeep; Chuck McIntosh in the 1948 GMC Bovina Fire Truck (with Corey Tartarczuk filming on top); Bob Burgin in 512 (2019 Freightliner/Alexis Fire Truck); John Cianci in 541 (2010 International/Alexis Fire Truck); Kristin Schneider and son Abram in 591 (2007 GMC/KME Fire Truck); Bobby Miciledes (EMT-P) and Ellie Salmon (EMT-B) in 562 (2015 F-350 Ambulance).

January 2, 2023 - Burns Family float included the oldest and youngest parade participants - Frances Burns at 99 and Farrah Wright, daughter of Josh and Faith Burns Wright, at 6 weeks. Other participants included Colleen Heavey, Jack Burns, Libby Lamport, Allison Heavey, Karley Heavey, Gary Burns, Frances Burns, Susan E. Burns, Julia Burns, Alex Stanton, Luke Burns, Ariel Burns, Fred Phillips, Norma Phillips, Amy Burns, Lisa Stanton, Nick Frandsen, Faith Burns, Joan Burns, Faith's two children, Farrah and John, Chad Burns, Chad's wife and their two children. Alex Stanton and Allison Heavey recreated Jack and June Burns' memorable 1970 parade appearance as the couple from the famous Grant Wood painting.

January 3, 2023 - Tony Gabriel entered a number of tractors for the parade. While wonderful to see these machines beautifully restored by Tony and his crew, what really struck me was the local connection that many of these tractors had. The 1948 Farrall H was owned by Robert Burns, Sr and driven by his great grandson, Jack Stanton. The 1952 John Deere A, owned by Frank McPherson, was driven by his son Mac McPherson. More tractors will show up in subsequent entries during the month.

January 4, 2023 - A number of antique automobiles made appearances in the parade. Jim Dewitt, accompanied by his wife, Joann, drove his 1910 Model T Ford. Hall Wilkie drove his very recently acquired 1941 Ford, accompanied by Lauren Culpepper and Ray LaFever. Frank and Lenore Lippman drove over from Roxbury  in their 1952 Chevy Station Wagon.

January 5, 2023 - Bovina's dairying heritage was promoted by the Delaware Co. Dairy Promoters. Participants included Angela Cerosaletti, Meredith McCann, Delores McCann, Laney Mondore, Delaware County Dairy Ambassador Jessica Coleman, Delaney McCann, and Darbey Mondore.   The antique truck with the Farming Bovina banner was driven by Jim Jurjens. This was his family's antique milk truck from Meridale.

January 6, 2023 - Monroe Family Farm float included:  Bob Monroe (tractor driver), Christine Monroe, Dan Buel, Naomi Buel, Lauren Monroe, Lois Monroe, Jeff Monroe (truck driver), James Monroe, Donna Monroe, Caleb Rogers, Olivia Rogers (Barb Monroe's kids, she wasn't there due to having Covid), Erin (Buel) Seales (Naomi's daughter), with her husband Cory and children Samson and Eiana Seales; Kyle Buel with his wife Jessica (Ross) Buel and children Isaiah and Noah; Beverly Wine. The truck was a 1949 Chevy truck that was owned by Henry Monroe, Lauren's late father.

January 7, 2023 - Dave Mueller brought two antique tractors to the parade, driven by his daughters Camille and Stella: 1946 Silver King tractor – Dave Mueller and daughter Stella; 1949 8N Ford tractor – Camille Mueller and CeCe Finn.
