Remembering the Bovina Bicentennial Parade, Part 3

 

For the month of January, I’m going to do daily postings on the Town of Bovina Historian Facebook page on the Bovina Bicentennial parade held on July 30, 2022. This is the third of what will be four postings in January sharing these entries with you. I thought it would be nice during the cold winter months to reminisce about that lovely day in July. It’ll also serve a second purpose – I may have missed some names and other information on the parade entries, so please contact me at bovinahistorian@gmail.com. I want to have an accurate record of the parade.

• January 16, 2023 - Andrew and Sophie Reinertsen came to Bovina in 1917. Their many descendents, friends and family turned out in force for the parade: Colleen Heavey, Denise VanDuesen, Norma Gabriel, Marie Burns, Annette Moody, Andrea Williams, Marcia Bagley, Monica Liddle, Sylvia Liddle, Marlene Cammer, Don LaFever, Lisa Stanton, Libby Lamport, Josh VanDuesen. Ally and Karlye Heavey, Amy Burns, Alex Stanton, Sophia and Ella Warner, Ben VanDuesen, Paula Bagley, Mason Bagley, Klara Bagley, Kaitlen Bagley, Paula Bagley, Isabella Mincarelli, Casey Eagle and Nicole Nagel. The tractor, driven by Jim LaFever, was once owned by Leif Reinertsen and restored by the Gabriel crew.

• January 17, 2023 - Music was provided by Bovina Rock band "The College Farm" – Josh Herzog, Matt Pelletier, Andy Pelletier, and Chris Dukes, with Ed Weber driving the tractor. They provided music during the program on the flat in the afternoon and again at Livestock in the evening, so they had a busy day.

• January 18, 2023 - Maple Shade Farm celebrated its Bovina roots:  Abby Wilson, Jay Wilson (driving the tractor) and their children, McKenzie, Ryan and John. Abby's sister Molly Brannen from Pepacton Farms on Pink Street was also on the float with her sons, Henry and Preston Post.

• January 19, 2023 - Livestock Foundation/Bovina Dairymen: Livestock Foundation bottle cap truck, 1992 Ford F150, owned  and driven by John Finn. The other truck also owned by John, was a 1932 Ford Pickup. Unit participants included Ben Denison, Julia Burns, John Finn, Amelia Taylor, Leah Rinaldi, Nick Frandsen, Luke Burns, Ariel Burns, Gary Burns, Jess Buckberry, Alan Scarpa, Mike Brown, Alex Taylor, and Tim Bray.

• January 20, 2023 - More of the tractors from and restored by the Gabriel crew: 1952 John Deere B, owned by George Hall; 1956 John Deere 60, Kyle Gabriel (owner and driver); 1958 John Deere 620; 1949 Ford 2N Tractor, owned by Jim Gabriel, driven by his grandson Andrew Liddle.

• January 21, 2023 - The Hilson Family entry included Gretel Hilson-Schneider, Gwen Hilson, Hans Hilson-Schneider, Jesse Hilson, Jim Hilson, Sib Hilson-Schneider, Julie Hilson, Mark Schneider (driver).

• January 22, 2023 - St. James Church's Lord of the Rings themed float included Christina Grasso, George Grasso, Giulia Grasso, Amy Lienert, Marcus Lienert, Luke Moore, Carley Moore, Will Moore, Paul Moore, Jessica Moore, Jamie O'Donnell, Shawn Sulger, PJ Sulger, Madelyn Vorisek, Janice Winner, Dick Winner, and Xavier Young.

• January 23, 2023 - While Bovina's Fire Department was out in force, several other area fire departments/EMS joined us in the celebration, coming from Delhi, Andes, South Kortright, Margaretville, Stamford and Andes.

• January 8, 2023 - Not so antique but still special cars: John and Carmen Tucker drove their 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 convertible.  Bonnie Denison drove her 1972 Super Beetle Convertible, with her mom Jan Bray along for the ride. Roger Robson drove his 1977 Pontiac Canam, with his daughter, Emma.

• January 9, 2023 - LaFever Insurance Agency, Jillienne LaFever (owner and driver) and Smith’s Tree Services, Derek Smith owner and driver, with his daughter Sadie along for the ride, joined in the festivities. 

• January 10, 2023 - Pat Miele rode in her Stonyfield Farm dump truck, with Wilford Barnhart driving, and Carrie Weber, Zach and Evan Weber and Sarah Cox and Marina Cox as passengers.

• January 11, 2023 - Don and Debbie Coager from Don’s Dairy Supply in South Kortright drove their Sweet Dreams Ice Cream truck, accompanied by their granddaughter Zoey White.

• January 12, 2023 - More tractors. This 1958 Massy Ferguson 50 was owned by Charles N. McIntosh. It was restored and driven by Bryan McIntosh, Charlie's grandson. The tractor is pulling a Bovina Center Water Company pump, owned by Chuck McIntosh. Also in the parade was a Massy lawn tractor, owned by Chuck and driven by his grandson Chase Rockefeller. And John Laing from Bloomville drove his Massy 98 in the parade. 

• January 13, 2023 - Clark Lay's 1914 Indian Motorcycle, a feature in several Bovina parades, was brought back for the Bicentennial by its current owner, Andrew Leahy.

• January 14, 2023 - Brent Trimbell's Lasting Impression Landscape and Excavation brought along a couple pieces of equipment, involving several family members. Brent Trimbell drove the Bobcat, while Shae Trimbell  a lawn mower. Annalynn and Brooklynn Trimbell carried the sign.

• January 15, 2023 - Bovina Center Montessori School came out in force:  Sophie Wallas Rasmussen, Head of School, Co-founder; David Madie, co-founder; Ryan Tucker, Middle School Teacher (yellow); Jenna Tucker; Dan Deysenroth (on tractor) and Nova Iris Sazonova, inside the wolf. The students were Rose Tucker, sitting, Weston Deysenroth, Sophie Deysenroth, Amelie Madie, Leon Madie, and Seraphim Kai Malloy.

January 1923 - 100 Years Ago in "That Thriving Town"

 

Here's what was happening in Bovina 100 years ago this month, from the pages of the Andes Recorder.

January 5, 1923

·         The tax collector is again with us.

·         Mr. Palmer has moved from Delhi into rooms in what is known as the Dickson big house.

·         The Bovina Center school opened Tuesday, but many are staying home with whooping cough.

·         Mrs. Nancy Jane Ackerly, of Margaretille, who was a native of Bovina celebrated her 90^th birthday on December 28.

Deaths of Adults the Lowest in History of Town

In the town of Bovina during 1922 there were 22 births, 5 marriages and 9 deaths – 3 adults and 6 infants.  This is believed to be the lowest death rate of adults that the town has ever had.  The average age of the adults was 71 ½ years.  In 1921 there were 17 births, 6 marriages and 8 deaths, with the average age of the 6 adults of 68 years.

 

January 12, 1923

·         Lauren Dickson returned this week to his law studies at Yale.

·         The Bovina Center Co-operative Creamery icehouse is being filled with ice from Lake Mahikan.

·         Ruth Coulter fell on the street last Wednesday and injured her arm quite severely and she has had to carry it in a sling.

·         The plasterers are on the job at Lake Delaware and are now working on the rectory, and carpenters are rushing their work to keep out of their way.

·         Miss Jennie Miller, who stays at Walter Wilson’s up-town, suffered a shock last Friday afternoon which paralyzed one side.  She has improved a little during the last few days.  Mrs. Lucy Coulter is caring for her.

·         Sloan Archibald celebrated his 75^th birthday on Thursday, January 4.  In honor of the event his son, Russell Archibald, entertained Mr. and Mrs. Archibald at dinner Thursday evening at his home in Delhi, and also presented his father with $50 in gold.

·         The Bovina students returned to their studies at Delaware Academy on Tuesday, viz; William Wilson, Courtney Currie, William Gordon, Beatrice Hoy, Ruth Coulter, Wilemina Archibald, Mary Brown, Helen Gladstone, Margaret Gordon, Marion McPherson.   Owing to a severe cold Janet Laidlaw did not return.

 

January 19, 1923

·         Herman Johnson has gone to New York City for a week.

·         Fred Johnson is in quite poor health under the doctor’s care.

·         A. Jones is here to start the condensing pan at the Bovina Center creamery as the cheese market is dull.

·         Miss Jennie Miller, who had a shock two weeks ago, is much better and Mrs. Lucy Coulter has returned home.

·         The ice house of the uptown creamery has been filled with ice from the Johnson pond.  Alex Thomson had the contract.

·         A few weeks ago while Mrs. Mary Ann Russell, at the Butt end, was washing a mended milk can she sustained a cut on the end of the middle finger on her right hand.  The wound apparently healed and then broke out again and blood poisoning was feared.  The physician says that the trouble comes from a nerve having been cut.

 

January 26, 1923

·         The trucks are again on the job after being shut in for three or four days by the snow storm.

·         The skim milk from the Bovina Center creamery is being hauled to the Ayer & McKinney plant at Delhi.

·         A new switchboard is soon to be put in the central office of the Bovina Center Telephone company.

·         John Burns in upper Bovina, was taken to the Delhi hospital last week to receive treatment for dislocated knee the result of a fall.
